form strategy

Socio-spatial tactics of banquette seating that caters for individuals and groups. It clusters people into a specific space yet still allows for privacy.

The centre of the banquette seating joinery serves as a planter. Within it grows Kangaroo paw and Everlasting daisy, both of which are Australian native plants.
natural lighting

Open rooftop without any enclosed walls allow for natural lighting to fill the space from all directions. A narrow roof provides shade for certain areas.

artificial lighting

Globe pendants as task lighting illuminates the tables during the evening. Recessed strip lighting as accent lighting illuminates the organic shape of the banquette seating.
inclusivity

Curved banquette seating creates edges of passive spaces good for single and double seating. Small round tables also provide more privacy.

Loose tables, ottomans, and chairs allow the layout of furniture to adapt to different users. This ensures spatial flexibility for users with disabilities.

With sustainability in mind, ashcrete is used for the ceiling instead of traditional concrete. Fly ash, the main component of ashcrete, is a by-product of coal-burning power plants, such as the White Bay Power Station. In addition, recycled concrete aggregate is used for the flooring. The aggregate is gathered around the site during site clean-up. Porcelain, chosen due to its durability, ability to diffuse light, and its pattern that maintains the existing brick wall of the White Bay Power Sation, is sourced locally from sustainable suppliers. EARP manufactures porcelain titles using recycled wastewater and sources their materials within 500 miles of their facility. In addition, cork fabric and hemp fabric, both biodegradable and 100% natural, are used to upholster the banquette seating joinery and ottomans. In addition, the tables are made from cork and recycled glass, an eco-friendly material since it turns glass waste into a stunning tabletop. Lastly, Kangaroo paw and everlasting daisy, both Australian native plants, are grown in the planter within the seating joinery.

Local Nest menu

floor and wall material / half wall

banquette seating / planter
The Local Nest Menu features the unity logo. It represents and communicates the intention and narrative of the civic centre being to re-share the history and identity of the site.
The menu is made from recycled paper which is re-pulped and turned into new paper. This process turns waste into an eco-friendly material.
Concrete aggregate and honed porcelain tiles minimize light reflection which may be uncomfortable for individuals due to the rooftop being exposed to natural sunlight.
The half wall divides the space into two different zones while maintaining connectivity and allowing users to see and move across the interior more fluidly.
