Process

Exploration and self-reflection have helped determine design directions. Below is a documentation of the process and steps taken to design unity.

The initial project name and logo. The logo looked corporate and needed to be reworked.

Volumetric propositions were explored through form. Further research on fourthspace and public behaviour led to form development.

Initial spatial zoning of ground floor of boiler house. The library space did not consider the location of existing boiler machinery.

ACCESSIBILITY DIAGRAM.png

Circulation and accessibility was explored throughout the entire site starting from the forecourt to the rooftop.

First iteration of volumetric propositions in the forecourt. Bench seating joinery was large and did not divide the space appropriately.

First iteration of volumetric propositions in the library. Seating joinery was arranged to create zones within the library.

The logo was reworked to better communicate the narrative of the redesign of the White Bay Power Station.

Rooftop additions were explored with reference to the Adaptive Reuse Architectonic Expressions by Cramer 2007 and Robert 1989.

Initial spatial zoning of first floor of boiler house. The meetings rooms were positioned right beside the exhibition space.

JOURNEY DIAGRAM.png

The journey and experience, throughout the entire site, of two different individuals were analysed.

First iteration of volumetric propositions in the entrance and central circulation spine.

First iteration of volumetric propositions in the gallery. This form was kept and further detailed.

The initial project identity and programmatic diagram. Spatial adjacency, interspatial amenity, and noise were explored.

Initial spatial zoning of forecourt and coal handling shed based on programmatic diagram.

15-rooftop.png

Initial spatial zoning of rooftop of boiler house. The zoning of the lift and stairs were later repositioned.

Site axonometric in line work communicating the first iteration of volumetric propositions.

Interactive wall was envisioned to be a large whiteboard. This was later redesigned to be a digital LED interactive wall.

First iteration of volumetric proposition in the rooftop. Spatial arrangement was kept and joinery was further detailed.

Flythrough communicating the first iteration of volumetric propositions throughout the entire site.
